Have you ever looked at people doing a sport and thought “Wow, that’s cool, I wish I could do that”? Isn’t it always the case that the coolest looking sports are either really hard to do, or really expensive? Well there’s a new sport that is rapidly growing in popularity in the UK, that is VERY cool, remarkably easy to do, and is also affordable.
Welcome to the world of Stand Up Paddle Boarding, or SUP as it’s better known. SUP gained popularity in Hawaii and then across the sun-kissed beaches of North America. It’s finally arrived here in the UK, and as one of the fastest growing water sports in the world, it’s sure to become a much more common sight.
The basics are really simple. You have an oversized surf board, and a single bladed paddle. And then comes the best bit…. you simply stand on the board and paddle! Sounds almost too easy? Well it really is. SUP boards are so stable that anyone can learn to paddle and enjoy the sport in a really short time period. Yes you need balance and coordination, but it’s not like snowboarding where you’ll spend hours, days and weeks flat on your face before you get anywhere near competent.
Here at Get More Adventure we are passionate about bringing this amazing sport to as many people as possible. We’ll be doing that by launching Oxfordshire’s first ever dedicated SUP School. Based in and around Oxford, at various locations on the River Thames and River Cherwell, we can offer beginners lessons for up to 6 people at a time. It’s the perfect activity to do with your friends, family or work colleagues.
If you’re wondering what stand up paddle boarding looks like, have a look at some of the photos below:
Oxfordshire is full of beautiful stretches of river that are perfect for beginners to learn SUP. Wide open rivers with a gentle flow are really great for paddling on, and you’ll discover fantastic scenery you’d never get to see from the river bank!
At Get More Adventure we only use inflatable SUP boards from Red Paddle Co. Red’s inflatable SUP boards are the world’s best boards, and are perfectly suited to beginners and experienced paddlers alike. They are tough, yet light, really stable and easy to paddle.
Our SUP instructors are all experienced paddlers, fully qualified by the UK’s leading SUP Organisation, The British Stand Up Paddle Boarding Association (BSUPA) and fully qualified Outdoor First Aiders.
The staff at Get More Adventure have your safety at the heart of everything we do, which is why we’ve teamed up with the best equipment manufacturers to ensure you have the best kit possible keeping you safe and secure whilst you’re on the water.
Anyone taking part in a SUP Lesson with us gets properly fitted with a personal flotation device (life jacket!). We only use PFD’s from the market leader in paddle sport safety, Palm Equipment. We also provide wetsuits for all participants, which keep you cosy warm, and also add buoyancy. We source our wetsuits from a British surf company that have a tried and tested reputation, and that are ideally suited to SUP. Whether you’re tall, short, medium or large, we’ll have an Osprey wetsuit to fit you and keep you warm.
Of course if you have your own wetsuit, you can bring that along to guarantee the best fit. And during the summer months when it’s warm, you are quite fine in board shorts and a t-shirt!
Our SUP School lessons will be starting in late April, early May 2015, and will run throughout the summer and Autumn. If you’d like to join us for a session, get in touch by emailing email@example.com or give us a call on 07775 920 276. We book groups of up to 6 people at a time, and will be running up to 4 sessions a day.
We are gong to be running a number of special offers throughout the year, and to get things started we’ve got a fantastic deal for anyone booking a lesson in May. Check out the deal below, and get in touch.
All the best,
Owner & Chief Adventurer
